Hip mobility is 🔑 ...recently the focus of my practice has been on hip stabilization and flexibility, as I've realized how essential it is for many other postures that I'm constantly working on such as splits and inversions. I've never focused much attention on my hips and just accepted how tight they were, until I realized how much they were affecting my practice. I feel like the emphasis I've placed on hip mobility has already deepened my practice. Anantāsana pose (Vishnu's Couch) “Ananta” is the name given to the divine serpent who is devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu. This pose is often known as “Reclining Vishnu’s Pose,” but it is really named after Ananta, the serpent upon whom Vishnu rests in a yogic sleep. Benefits - stretches the whole side of the body, hamstrings and awakens the core to maintain balance. Working on balance and core strength are important parts of any yoga practice. We do a lot of standing balances and even arm balances, but balancing on your side is quite rare and offers a really different experience. It's really quite a challenge to stay balanced on the knife's edge of your side without tipping over. It's also a nice addition to any practice because it forces you to stabilise yourself in a way that your body and your mind are not used to. Changing it up like this is what yoga is all about. This pose improves balance, and stretches the hamstrings & inner thighs like crazy, as well as the calves. Have a strap handy if those are areas of tightness for you. Initially, you may find some difficulty balancing your body in this position. If so, use a wall to help maintain balance. A strap around the ball of the foot also helps with leg lift In this pose. Start with knee bent first and then straighten slowly with strap. In this side lying pose, we consciously create an asymmetry in the respiratory mechanism that can be helpful in getting rid of deeply seated breathing habits. While practicing this asana, the more stable your pelvis is, the easier it will be to maintain balance. Ensure you maintain a straight spine. If you aren't aware, Ananta is a name of the Hindu deity Vishnu, the Preserver, the one who sustains the universe between the cycles of creation and destruction. It’s also the name of the thousand headed serpent that serves as Vishnu’s couch, which might explain why the pose looks tranquil. Once you can find extension and balance, you can then release any extra effort in order to invite relaxation into the pose. Sutra II.47 of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, as translated by B.K.S. Iyengar, expresses this concept as: 'Perfection in an asana is achieved when the effort to perform it becomes effortless and the infinite being within is reached'.
