I think this is my favorite holiday season de-stressor. I️ practice this one often. Sometimes people ask me how long I’ve been practicing yoga and I️ never know what to say. I’ve been doing some yoga poses all or most my life regardless if I️ thought of them as “yoga.” I️ took my first class, learned sun salutations, and got a book and began a home practice around 20 years ago. But I’ve been doing this pose for longer. I️ often do legs up wall instead of (in place of) savasana. There was an accident on the already-busy highway this morning, the second debilitatingly-delaying accident in two weeks, causing me to get to the studio by the skin of my teeth for the second time in two weeks. Heating is wonky at the studio and my music refused to work at first. . . Needless to say, my 9:30 class focused a lot on grounding. . . After the students left, I took a moment to get a little extra grounding in myself — a little legs up the wall and belly breathing. . . You cannot calm down the mind without incorporating the body. Yogis have been saying that for a while and science is finally catching up. Supported inversions like this temporarily lower blood pressure and belly breathing stimulates our rest & digest response. Legs up! I realised the majority of my favourite yoga poses these days seem to involve lying down ;) Savasana. Dwi Pada Pithum (but also cause the name is so awesome) And this beauty. Viparita Karani. Or if your Sanskrit is as dodgy as mine legs up the wall Ahhhhh. Love this. I read that 20 minutes of this mamma gives you equivalent of 2 hours sleep I’ll take that! To do it: find a wall, grab a cushion or block, park your hips beside said wall, swing legs up as you shimmy to lying down. So you’ll be lying with your back flat and your legs resting up on the wall. So great for lymphatic system and if you have an imperfect practice a brill way to do a 10 minute meditation Seriously good for any mid afternoon slumps too #imperfectpractice #yoga #yogaforreallife #ViparitaKarani #meditation #sensitive #sisterhood
